Engaging Our Customers and our Community

At Burlington Hydro, our corporate and employee community involvement fundamentally builds on our commitment to our customers.

Because it is important for our employees to support and give back to our community, the Burlington Hydro Team participates in many community projects and events throughout the year. Our matching donation policy helps to encourage employee giving and shows that the company is also committed to the cause.

At Burlington Hydro we support:

  • The United Way – for nine years running we have received the Platinum Award (the highest honour given for outstanding participation)
  • Burlington’s Festival of Lights – as a contributor our crew assists with wiring, set-up and removal of displays
  • The Canadian Blood Services – we are proud to participate in the ‘Partners for Life’ program, where employees at all levels are encouraged to support their local donor clinics
  • Crime Stoppers – as advocates we work together to reduce grow operations and copper thefts

It’s the kind of news no one wants to hear about – an injury or fatality on a job site caused by a worker, vehicle or piece of equipment that inadvertently made contact with a live powerline. To keep powerline safety at the forefront, Burlington Hydro presents a Powerline Safety Seminar each year in the spring. The Ministry of Labour, Electrical Safety Authority and the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association presented content participate covering recent electrical powerline incidents in Ontario and the preventable circumstances that led to them.

Focus on Youth

For the past decade, Burlington Hydro has presented an interactive Electrical Safety Program to primary level students in our service area. Working on a three year cycle, the intent is that each child will receive at least two presentations during their time in primary school. The presentations use real life incidents as examples and teach children how to safely interact with electricity both in, and out of the home.

BHI staff devote time to mentor tomorrow’s future leaders, and are active participants in the Take Our Kids to Work program.

LEAP

Together with Halton Region Burlington Hydro is supporting LEAP, a year-round emergency financial assistance program designed to help low-income customers who have difficulty making electricity bill payments. LEAP is modeled after the “Winter Warmth” program, previously offered by Burlington Hydro. We chose to partner with Halton Region S&CS to connect individuals and families in crisis to the Region’s full range of assistance programs.

Executive Leadership

BHI executives lead by example, including President and CEO Gerry Smallegange who serves as a member of the Council of Governors of the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford, where together with other community leaders; he provides advice to the board on matters of policy and strategic direction. As Co-Chair for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, Gerry is a passionate supporter of raising financial support for children, teens and families who are unable to afford the full cost of participation in a YMCA program or activity.

Working for our Customers

As one of the most efficient local distribution companies in Ontario great service and passion for continuous improvement are at the heart of our culture. Burlington Hydro serves over 58,000 residential customers, and approximately 6,300 commercial and industrial customers throughout the city - we are committed to supporting the families, businesses and organizations in our community to create a lifestyle that adds to their quality of life.
