Accessible Image Description: Anatomy of a Hydro Pole
Located near the top of the hydro pole are primary wires which are high voltage lines that carry up to 27,600 volts; insulators which prevent energized wires from coming in contact with each other or the utility pole; and the transformer which steps down voltage from the primary line to the secondary line. Secondary wires carry up to 240 volts. About one-third of the way down the pole, are secondary wires which carry up to 240 volts; as well as phone and cable TV wires. Ground wire, which runs the entire length of the pole, directs any electricity on the pole safely onto the earth if there is a fault. Guy wires help stabilize the pole.
